Chapter Fifteen

Sewer Rats & the Tower

36 Hours Later

Lieutenant Speirs held the M1 assault rifle tight in the ready-up position, his squad following closely behind him as they waded through the watery muck. The stench of the tunnels was almost overpowering. Even with their filters set to maximum, they couldn’t remove all the particulate matter from the air. One of the Deltas smiled at their discomfort and told them the scent they smelled was the Tully excrement regularly deposited into the sewage tunnels from the apartment buildings above.

Seeing chunks of unknown material being pushed ahead of him by the mini waves his sloshing created was almost more than Speirs could stomach. He had been around a lot of crap in his time in the Army, but never in a million years had he thought he would wade through the sewer of an alien species. Yet here he was, sloshing through feces on a foreign planet, hundreds of light-years from Earth.

“We’re approaching Waypoint Charlie. Speirs, your platoon is with me. Keep up,” the operator known as Rooster called out to him over their coms.

Speirs tapped the transmit button twice, letting him know he acknowledged. Not having the same neurolinks as the Deltas, they had to rely on their standard coms systems—something the Delta guys seldom had to do, but it was second nature to everyone outside their organization.

Near as Speirs could tell, Rooster was either a sergeant or master sergeant. He looked like he knew what he was doing, and in Speirs’s eyes, that was all that mattered. When they reached the bend in the tunnel, he followed Rooster and the five other Deltas walking ahead of him. He was impressed with how stealthily and swiftly the team moved. They were like ghosts, barely discernible to the naked eye and silent until they wanted you to know they were there.

I wish we could use the same exoskeleton combat suits those guys have, thought Speirs. Wow, and those battle rifles…the Slayers…

When Rooster reached what Speirs thought was the end of the tunnel, he motioned for Speirs to come close. As they reached Waypoint Charlie, they now had to stay off the coms in case the enemy could detect their frequencies now that they were under their base. He spoke just above a whisper. “OK, Speirs, here’s the deal. We’re at the exit that puts us closest to the tower we’re taking down. Once our breacher cuts that hatch open”—he motioned with his head behind him. Speirs saw the cutting torch burning the hinges off some sort of door or hatch that sealed the sewer off from above. “Speirs, you with me?”

“Sorry. Yeah, I’m good.”

“OK, once my team goes up, we’re going to clear the immediate area around the entrance. Best we can tell, this ladder leads up to a storage room located to the rear of a building just a hundred meters away from the tower we’re going to blow. Once we’ve cleared the building, we’re going to see if we can get a little closer to the tower before we’re discovered.
